Inspired by the Louis XVI armchair, this seat is an icon in the Ox-idée catalogue. By taking up known codes, tamed, this seat inspires confidence and elegance, and positions the Ox-idée brand as the holder of a unique know-how. Both inside and outside the home, it is based on the principle of lightness, yet in contradiction with the reassuring weight of the seat. The idea behind this project was to materialise lightness with a single material: folded sheet steel. Available in several colours, it reflects the French know-how of the ox-idée brand.

The problem

Revaluing the craft industry was my mission on this project. The Ox-idée brand, founded by Lilian Thollet, is a French furniture brand, with expertise in sheet metal folding, based in the Lyon region. Through this seat, the aim was to create desirability and lightness with a robust, heavy, but qualitative material.
The LXVI Chair is the result of a meeting between design and craftsmanship, far from industrial mass production, based on simple principles.

Pain Points

The main problem that had to be faced was the weight of the material and its strength. Using folded sheet steel was a real challenge in the sense that it does not seem obvious at first that it is strong. On the other hand, taking into account the feasibility constraints, it was necessary to create a comfortable, welcoming and desirable seat.

Explore

The ideation, in conjunction with the brand's founder, took place over several weeks, and did not only focus on the seat. The aim of the project was above all to develop a new product, with meaning and to give a new vision to the brand.

Color, material & finishes

Formally and aesthetically, this seat takes up the codes of the Louis XVI armchair. But the aim was above all to modernise it. The wish was to create a light, simple, elegant and discreet chair.

The answer

The final result, in accordance with the Ox-idea brand, corresponds perfectly to the original expectations. The folded, galvanised sheet metal has an exceptional finish and a unique feel. Although the seat is heavy, it conveys the idea of lightness that was sought after from the start. The double top magnifies the useful part and takes up the codes of the brand, just like the tapered legs.

Thanks to the double tray, the seat is not only aesthetically pleasing but also very useful, e.g. for placing magazines or other personal items.

Inside or Outside ?

The chair, thanks to the steel, will fit both inside and outside the home.
The user is free to place the seat wherever he wants. It can also be used as the main seat for a shop or restaurant and thus give a strong identity to the place.
